Mrs. Reetz's Remarkable Students from Room 26!

We had some wonderful community members come and read to us for Read Across America Day! Giovanni's Mom  We especially loved having some of our own classroom family read to us! Alexis's Mom Alexis Mr. Martinez Mrs. Gault Our class also had fun dressing up for Read Across America Week. 

Third grade math standards introduce so many new concepts, especially multiplication and fractions. This week we started fractions.  Students need to understand that fractions represent part of a whole - a whole pizza, a whole piece of candy, a whole piece of paper, or a whole class.  (These are just some examples and not all that we will use to teach about fractions.) On Thursday, each team modeled a fractional unit with different items. We had a gallery walk of our exhibits and then came back together and shared what we observed. Our fractions unit will continue for the next few weeks!

Our class went on our first field trip for this year to the museum and city hall. We started out in the City Council Chamber...  and met the heads of several Sanger City departments. From there we walked over to the Sanger Depot Museum... We are looking forward to our next field trip in March!

At last!  One of my favorite things to teach to my third graders - multiplication. We are working very hard (and having fun) so students understand just exactly what multiplication is. By the end of the unit, students should understand that 3 x 3 is the same thing as 3 + 3 + 3 and also know that 3 x 196 is the same thing as 196 + 196 + 196.  They may not know how to do the multiplication algorithm but they will understand the concept for 3 x 196. Please start working with your child to get their multiplication facts memorized! We have started by working on multiplying by 2, 10, 5, and 1.

Sanger Unified has started something new this year for all our 2nd and 3rd grade students.  Once a week we have music instruction for each class. We have music on Tuesdays at Jackson and our class has it from 10:45-11:15.  Our teacher is Mrs. Pielstick and the students just love having music class with her!  I am so excited that your student has this wonderful opportunity!

On Friday, we brainstormed some possible goals that we would like to meet for third grade this year. I was very impressed with the list the students created! Each student was then asked to pick one of these goals or another one they had in mind and to decorate their goal pennant. This next week we will discuss what things we can do to help meet our goals!  Looking forward to displaying these in class.
