Multiplication Strategies

This past week we started understanding just exactly what multiplication is. We have looked at multiplication as groups. We have looked at multiplication as repeated addition. We have looked at multiplication as skip counting on a number line. And we have looked at multiplication as an array. If you want to start working with your student on memorizing their multiplication facts, this would be the perfect time.  We need to get our third graders to automaticity with this math skill.

Remind App!

Hello Room 26 Families! I have a wonderful app that can help you stay up to date with class news.  It is called Remind and it's absolutely free! You can be "Reminded" with a text like message or you can also get emails. Thanks for stopping by and seeing the latest news!

Fun Friday!

Last Friday we had our first Fun Friday.  Students earn Fun Friday by turning in fully complete homework.  Each day I check their homework and then initial a box.  Once all the boxes are filled out I hold on to the ticket until our next Fun Friday! To help your student earn Fun Fridays, please go over their homework calendar with them and make sure they have completed all their assignments. Each afternoon we complete the homework calendar and you can also check what is assigned for homework by coming here and clicking on the homework page.

Jackson Carnival Coming Soon!

Can you believe our carnival will be here in less then three weeks? Our theme basket this year is a baby shower!  A flyer went home today with suggestions for our basket.  Any donations would be appreciated!  All the funds raised from our auction basket comes back to the class.  Theme baskets are always one of my favorite things at our carnival. The carnival theme this year is Western Rodeo!   Please look for more information to come home soon about our carnival!

Computer Lab

The third grade team LOVES technology.  I hope your student came home and shared with you how we used the computer cart today.  We will have one of the computer or iPad carts every Tuesday and Friday. Today all students started using Xtramath to practice their math facts.  I will be sending a letter home that will help you set up practice time on your computer, tablet or smart phone. Almost all students have taken the STAR reading test and I have started setting AR goals.  Please look for information about AR (Accelerated Reader) to also come home in a letter this week.

We Made It!

We have survived and thrived during our first two days of school.  It has been a delight to meet all your students and I am really looking forward to a fantastic year. There will be a few changes but we should be settling down into a routine over the next couple of weeks. Please remember that if you have any questions, you can email me at: janelle_reetz@sanger.k12.ca.us or call me at: (559)524-6180 And you can always leave a comment here too.  Thanks so much for stopping by.  Be sure to check back for updates.   P.S.  I used an app called Waterlogue to "watercolor" your student's pictures.  Can you tell if your student is pictured?

Supplies

Here are a few items that will help your student with our learning this year: a composition book a spiral notebook with at least 70 pages - wide ruled dry erase pens pencils - we always need those Classroom supplies: boxes of tissues cleaning wipes such as Clorox or Lysol or other brands pencils dry erase pens wide ruled binder paper hand sanitizer (the pump bottles are best for quick use in class) Personal supplies (if your child wants them): water bottle  pencil box For now, that is all I can think of, but I will let you know if we have additional needs. Thank you so much!

Welcome Back!

Wow!  Summer has flown by, but I am looking forward to meeting all of my third graders and their families this year. Would you like to get to know a bit about me? I have been teaching at Jackson for 20 years.  This is my 14th year in third grade and before that I taught 6th grade and 8th grade. I've been married to Mr. Reetz (who is a district substitute and you might already know him) for 25 years and we have a 14 year old daughter.  Her name is Kiley and you will get to know all about her because I talk about her a lot. I come from a family of teachers.  My brother, step-sister, brother-in-law, step-father, aunts, and uncles have all been or are currently teaching.  I also went to Jackson School, only I went to the one in Selma. This is me in 3rd grade! IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 18 at 6:00 PM.   Our PTO is hosting an ice cream social.  The evening will begin in the cafeteria and then move to the classrooms. First Day of Sc

Hello There!

There is so much learning going on in Room 26. We recently wrote an article for the Jackson Jaguar and it was so fun to look back on some of the things we've done so far this year.  I hope you get a chance to read the article.  This month's issue should be going home on Monday. Over the next 8-9 days or so, we'll be wrapping up our division unit and then starting on geometry.  The third grade team has a math training this week so we're looking forward to bringing back even more strategies to help your students succeed with math.  I've been seeing a lot of deeper understanding of some of our math concepts from our class. We have also just started a unit for ELA & Science combined on weather and climate.  Students are learning about the different types of weather and also several of the climates of the world. Looks like we will have our first field trip on March 20 to the Farm and Nutrition Day at the Fresno County Fair Grounds.  We are waiting to be offic
